Transcendent is a big word that I see bandied around often in the literary world but if it could ever legitimately apply to anything, it's Joy Harjo's writing. This memoir straddles the spaces between reality and myth, and I am a sucker for the liminal. This is the current U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo's memoir of her journey to becoming a poet. Wow, it will knock your socks off. I highly recommend it if you are a poet, a lover of poetry. Of course, you don't need to like poetry to read it. The poetry within the book really enhances the story. It's beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
