This is one of the most powerful and amazing books I've ever read.
I was predisposed to love it: Alexie is one of my favorite authors; raw, painful memoir one of my favorite genres.
This collection of poems and short narrative pieces is powerful, reflective, honest, illuminating, brash, heartbreaking. Alexie is moving through something life-altering, and sharing his journey with us. This man is brilliant. Can I just say how much I love his writing? There's nothing he can't do (and do well): poetry, short stories, novels for adults and teens, screenplays...and now a memoir. The man is a Quintuple Threat.
Anyway. I'd been parsing out the final pages of the book...if only to prolong the enjoyment of reading his words. Sadly, I've reached the end.

There's no other voice like Sherman Alexie's. He's piercingly honest and funny and heartbreaking often at once. No hiding, no front in his words. He hits hard on just about everyone in this memoir (Natives, whites, his mother), but he loves much more. Vulnerable and lovely. The book is structured like patches of a quilt. Loved it.
