The 12-year and I really enjoy this book. It's a unique concept -- a perfect world without disease or death where an army of scythes are tasked with killing (called gleaning) citizens of their choosing to control the size of the immortal population. Of course there are scythes who "glean" with compassion and others who do it for sport, which makes this utopian future very dystopian. There's so much to contemplate and discuss in this book. A good dystopian sci-fi adventure. Non-stop action and a well explained alternate futuristic existence. Citra and Rowan are reluctant apprentices of the Scythedom, one of whom will become an official Scythe and glean a quota of people to keep balance in a world that has cured death, disease, but needs to keep the extreme overpopulation at bay to continue to survive.

A sold 4 star read. I enjoyed this more than I expected. It was on my TBR shelf for quite some time.

Wow. What a pleasant surprise. What a smart, engaging young adult dystopian/fantasy read. I’m not a huge fantasy fan but this book has definitely changed my mind. The plot, the dialogue, the words of wisdom. Wow. I could not stop turning the pages and I just ordered the whole series. Do yourself a favor and get this book, you won’t be disappointed.
