First of all, let me say that I'm so glad Rowling is continuing to write Cormoran Strike mysteries, because Strike, as voiced by Robert Glenister, is most definitely my book boyfriend.

This was an especially good one, all the clues you need are there, and there are no obvious red herrings, but the story is so complex that I didn't come anywhere close to solving it. The killer turns out to be a complete sociopath, which at first felt a little over dramatic, but in retrospect makes sense I guess (a First of all, let me say that I'm so glad Rowling is continuing to write Cormoran Strike mysteries, because Strike, as voiced by Robert Glenister, is most definitely my book boyfriend.

The killer turns out to be a complete sociopath, which at first felt a little over dramatic, but in retrospect makes sense I guess (aren't all killers sociopaths, in a way?). I was really pleased that the story was told only from Strike's and Robin's POVs, this way we know only and exactly what they know. I love how they work together as partners (yes he hires her back because of course he does).

The rest of this review has spoilers if you're the kind of reader who doesn't want to know ANYTHING. (No spoilers for who the killer is or how Cormoran and Robin figure it out.)

And I really like the new character, Barkley, who Strike hires to help with the case, I hope he's a regular now. I wish we saw more of Vanessa (Met detective, or DI, or whatever her title is). The title plays a role in the story and therefore makes sense, something I wasn't always able to say about past Strike books ("silkworm" and "cuckoo's calling" connections to the plot felt forced and I'm still not sure what "career of evil" had to do with anything). I do wish Rowling didn't feel the need to start every danged chapter with an epigraph, it adds nothing to the story and is really annoying in audiobook form. And I kind of wish the stories weren't feeling a bit formulaic: in every book, Strike injures his leg, Robin's expert driving of her Landrover is key, Robin feels inadequate, Matthew is a dick, Robin stubbornly marches into danger, and Charlotte makes an appearance. So, yes all that is going to happen. Maybe I won't mind so much in the next book now that I know to expect it. I did like how Sara Shadlock played a key role in this mystery, I didn't expect that.

One thing I didn't understand though: what did Freddy's money clip have to do with anything? I missed that. ...more

In my opinion, this is the best book of Cormoran Strike. Galbraith has successfully combined a thriller with some actions, in-depth characterizations, and wonderful twists. It started right after the ending of the previous book, and from there, took off quite splendidly. You can't help but keep rooting for Cormoran and Robin, but at the same time you can feel their reluctance, doubts, and struggles with their personal lives and baggage.

As always, great characters, great story telling. A complex plot and some hairy moments. I would have given it full marks but it was far too long!

Leave it to Queen Joe to teach me some highbrow words, street slang, and 🐴 terms.
I prefer this over book 3 despite its length.

Since we had to wait so long between this latest installment of the Cormoran Strike series and the last, very frustrating one, I had forgotten that I FUCKING HATE ROBIN AND MATTHEW. I couldn't get far enough into the crime because I got bogged down in the Robin relationship nonsense. Wake me up when Strike and Robin finally get together, guys! ...more

3.75 stars, because this one is a little bit overly long (not uncommon for Rowling) and at times felt like two different books. But I really like Robin and Strike and look forward to the next one.
