There are many translations of Akhmatova, but, of those I've tried, these by Richard McKane, in a large Bloodaxe anthology, are my favourites. Because he doesn't rhyme, he doesn't have to force the sense. As I can't read a word of Russian, I don't know how true the translations are to the originals, but they seem to be wonderful poems in their own right. ...more
