Emelia, unfortunately, is a classic example of the concept that making your lead character somewhat unlikable is not enough to make her interesting - the character feels so massaged and constructed that it's hard to find her believable. However, Waldman's portrayal of William is delightful and his scenes are the highlight of the book.
