Five stars to this memoir, an amazing and harrowing account of growing up in Somalia and the dream of a better life in America. Eye opening and un-put-downable!

Compelling and easy to read. Fascinating story of life in Somalia, both under the warlords and under Al Shabaab.

After reading this extraordinary memoir, I searched online for recent news of events in Somalia. What makes Abdi Nor Iftin’s life story even more stunning (and, I’d argue, essential reading, especially for Americans) is the fact that so much of what he endured in Somalia as a child and young man is still ongoing all these years later. The “living hell” in Mogadishu that he describes is not yet in the past, which is all the more reason for his story to be widely read and appreciated.
