Downing's created a really interesting character in John Russell, who's a rather refreshing change from the types that tend to crop up in WWII literature. Russell has his heroic elements, but he's also deeply believable - his moral center isn't so righteous that he loses his sense of self-preservation, and his relationships with the women in his life are charming in their very ordinariness.

This was better than the first; the world-building was more subtle than minute details from a pre-war map of Berline. I still love the premise of a foreign correspondent and unwilling spy who sells out all of his masters according to his own lights. Like the first, the bang-up ending was a little too fantastic, but still fun. I'll be around for the next one.
