Decent detective mystery (that started out much stronger than it ended), but the thread in the past about the narrator's life was a bit too much for me. I don't really want to continue following her in other cases so I'm not going to pick up the 2nd book.

3.5 stars. Definitely a page-turner although I did guess the ending about halfway through, (which I don’t look down on because at least it made sense and followed logic), although there were so many characters and misdirections I found myself getting a little frustrated. Which is good in the sense the reader experiences the protagonist’s frustration. While the main character, Gemma Woodstock is an intriguing person, she has many too many flaws in her character for me to really like her. In her personal life, the only person she seems really committed to is her son Ben. Her job is her main focus to the exclusion even of her son, but she does not really ferret out the clues, they more or less find her, which is not a positive characteristic for a law enforcement professional.

Gemma Woodstock and her partner Felix are assigned to the death of Rosalind Ryan who is found dead floating in a lake. Rosalind was a classmate of Gemma's. Gemma has a young son, Ben, and is living with Ben's father, Scott, while having an affair with her partner. I really didn't like Gemma much, she treats Scott horribly, drinks a lot and spends a lot of time lusting after Felix. The case was somewhat interesting though the book bogs down quite a bit in the middle when not much at all is happen
