Readable in under two hours, it tells the story of a 16-year old orphan in a small village somewhere near the border with Gabon. This book takes place in Equatorial Guinea and follows the story of a teenage girl discovering herself. Her mother has died, she doesn't know who her father is, and she is known as "La Bastarda." Her family is pressuring her to start taking steps to get married and have children, but she resists.

I wanted to like this book. It felt important as it is the first novel by an Equatorial Guinean woman to be translated into English. It also explores issues of homosexuality which also felt important. H

Tradition is sometimes a thing which can break individuals which do not want to follow them. I believe we need to keep values and customs that makes us what we are as unique individuals from tradition, but if the tradition is against our core values, then we need to put tradition behind us.
