In many ways, I felt this book was exceptional. The exploration of mental illness—both how it feels to be the person suffering from intense emotional and psychological anguish, and how it feels to be related or in love with someone who does—was riveting. What kept me from enjoying the book as much as I might have otherwise were the slow sections that seemed to weigh down the narrative. This novel took about 100 pages to really bore into me. I wasn't initially drawn to the young version of the characters when the story was focused around the father, but once they turned adults and the story revolved around their brother Michael, I couldn't stop thinking about this novel long after I put it down each day.
