The historical detail in this novel is impressive, the time period and subject matter fascinating. I loved the way the author dealt with the moral dilemma of a love outside marriage. The presentation is complex and insightful, and doesn't insult the reader with simplistic solutions or opinions. For that reason, the character of Margaret seems especially well-developed, and I sympathized with her.
