If you like to lose yourself in stories of clandestine American CIA spies, brilliant Swedish women who work in law firms, thrilling gun battles and car chases, than this novel is for you. Great escape and just plain fun for a summer read on the beach or by the pool.

If you're looking for a competently executed war on terror-era thriller, I suppose this is as good as any. Opening in Damascus in 1980, it proceeds to jump around in time and space as so many of these stories do, drawing unsubtle connections between individual, institutional, and imperial sins of the past and their long-term consequences.
