What Members Thought

Tara Westover grew up in a remote part of Idaho, with parents who were worried about government interference in their lives, who did not allow their children to attend public school, who did not allow their family to go to the hospital, who thought end times were coming soon. Tara never attended school, and yet somehow managed to attend college and to eventually receive a PhD.
Reading about her life will leave you with your mouth open in astonishment.

I enjoyed this book, even though it is sad to read about such a dysfunctional family. The fact that Tara Westover was able to discover things for herself and make her own decisions made it a triumph. It is interesting to read and then think about how much influence and power our families have in so many aspects of our lives. Having an education and being educated have interesting meanings as well. So much also goes back to power of one person over another and how that power is wielded. distortio
