I started the PBS special on Hemingway and his wives somewhere along the time I was picking up and putting down this book by McLain. I was disappointed by the representation of Hemingway in both media efforts. Maybe I'm way off, but it seems to me Hemingway was suffering from what football players experience with their many concussions. The diagnosis for that type of paranoid, angry, irrational behavior is chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. The diagnosis is only determined at autopsy. But

Not as good as The Paris Wife but only because by this time Hemingway is a complete dick. With the three wives after Hadley, he was already conducting an affair with the next one before the previous wife knew it was over. So hard for me to feel any excitement or happiness for his new relationship with Martha Gellhorn (Wife#3). However the story of her career itself is very interesting. My second read about Hemingway’s wives by Ms. McLain, she digs deep into the viewpoint of life with Hemingway from Martha’s point of view. Take always that Hemingway was a bastard, though that isn’t anything really new. The book was more of a tester to the Spanish Civil War, as well as either Hemingway or Gellhorn’s lives, but still a fun read for the background.
