This novel is a deep-dive into the personality and marriage problems of an aging woman in Sweden. Britt-Marie is, as her name suggests, brittle and rigid. Her lack of flexibility is challenged by her decision to leave her husband because of his infidelity. She gives the impression of being totally unprepared for life on her own, yet she forges ahead with her intention to try to make it on her own.

Despite obvious shortcomings in Backman's novels and the fact that they are more or less alike, I can't refrain to like them. As I understood, with Backman there are very strong reaction from readers: either you enjoy it or you hate it.

This was a lovely surprise. I really enjoyed reading about Britt-Marie and the residents of Borg. This experience was a wee bit like reading Alexander McCall Smith -- you feel like you are wrapped up in a comfy blanket. I am looking forward to reading his other books.
