The first in a new series, this is a very good murder-in-the manor story, which takes place immediately after WWI in England. When several people receive their Christmas boxes with a nasy surprise in them - severed fingers suspected to be from a recent house guest - Phoebe and her maid Eva have to solve the crime before an innocent member of their household is tried and convicted of the murder. This is a story in the best tradition English cozies. Agatha Christie would be proud.
