3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up for a very satfsfying ending. This is a charming tale of a young Londoner, Nikki, who ends up with a job teaching "creative writing" to widows at the Sikh community center. Nikki soon discovers that the majority of her elderly students are illiterate, and have little interest in the elementary reading and writing exercises that she scrambles to provide; instead, they are soon narrating erotic tales that another student transcribes.

Oh my! Take one part immigrant experience, one part generational clashes, one part naughty stories, one part women’s liberation, and one part blockbuster subplot. Mix vigorously until blended, pour into London’s Southall neighborhood, and enjoy.
The novel is along the same vein as Crazy Rich Asians; richly entertaining despite some mainstream-y elements.
And yes, there are erotic stories, by and for Punjabi widows, and they are an absolute riot.

Meine Meinung:
„Geheime Geschichte für Frauen, die Saris tragen“ ist endlich mal wieder ein Buch, das mich richtig überrascht hat. Und sogar positiv! Was ich erwartet habe, waren Geschichten von indischen Frauen, die in London leben. Von Frauen, die an ihrem Lebensabend von ihrem Lebensweg berichten. Inklusive Drama, Liebe. Und vielleicht sogar etwas philosophisch über das Abfinden mit dem Schicksal.

A lovely read. Nikki, a Sikh Muslim trying to live a modern life, moves away from her family and gets a job. She needs more income and so she signs up to teach a creative writing class for women at the Sikh temple. From here several stories unfold. The widows in the class only want to write about their erotic fantasies and Nikki is at first shocked and then determined to support their writing. The immigrant experience, the female journey, the meeting of generations and a little bit of mystery ma
