I read this after the Hired Girl and feel like I struck the historical fiction YA jackpot. I read this book to my 12-year old, and we both really enjoyed it. Mercy Wong is an easy protagonist to love. It's a perfect selection for the younger YA readers. My daughter noted that one of the things that could have made this book better was if it had 44 chapters instead of 46. ;-) 4.5 stars
