I wholeheartedly enjoyed this engaging rambunctious adventurous story based loosely on the life of African-American cowboy Nat Love a.k.a. Deadwood Dick. Gritty, brutal but wonderfully addictive as humor, perseverance, and a pinch of luck showcases the time, the 1870s, and place, the frontier, from the point-of¬-view of an African-American. I don’t read westerns, but a GoodReads buddy read this and suggested it for January, so I checked it out and it was available in audio format from my library. Thank goodness is was an audiobook or I would not have enjoyed it—but the reader is VERY good. I didn’t care for the character’s cussing, but it mostly seemed exactly how the character would speak or react, so it was not as bothersome as in other books I have read.
