Okay, super slow going in the beginning... I almost gave up. I'm glad I didn't. Once we got to the real story it was an intense page-turner. I really enjoyed this one minus the hockey :)

I have mixed feelings about Beartown. I like Fredrik Backman’s writing style, but this is tough subject matter and a ton of F-words and crudity. This book is about how the people of a small town that worships hockey deals with the allegation that their star player raped a fellow student. There are also other complicated situations with loss, homosexuality, peer pressure, revenge, intimidation, and lots of inappropriate jokes about sex and cruel “jokes” targeting different groups. Didn't like this Backman book as nearly as much as his A Man Called Ove. I listened to this on my iPhone, borrowed from the library. One thing that didn't "sit" well with me was that, though it was set in Sweden (or Norway), it seemed like it was very Americanized, in some of the language & cultural bits. It didn't drip with the Scandinavian context that Ove had all through it.
