Part travelogue, all history. Fiedler doesn't present a new narrative but as he travels through modern Istanbul with his 14 year old son, the echoes of ancient Constantinople haunt both the writer and his reader. This is the writing of a true lover of history, not pretentious but full of curiosity and the pleasure of learning. I highly recommend it. It reads fairly slowly, but so many delights it is well worth it. ...more
