Put a completely dysfunctional family group together: (mother a meth addict, dying grandmother, kind grandfather, father in jail for dealing, two good kids) into the mix, with some racism and a dash of past slavery, add a couple of ghosts who are quite important to the story, and what do you get? I made it to about the half-way line but people, it was a slog. This one is just not for me. It is too grim. Too little happens. And if nothing happens, then a lot must happen inside / the characters must compel me / the prose must be gorgeous. But for me there were no compensations of this kind.
