This is what I get for diving into a book without reading much about it first. I get ghosts.
Things I liked:
* Ward's writing is fantastic, she completely transported me, reading it felt effortless.
* I loved the tension in the varying POVs. Ward handles this like a master. In the first chapter, from Jo's perspective, his mother looks like almost a monster, someone he'd be better off without. But the second chapter, from her POV, changes everything. Suddenly, I was sympathizing with her plight. Jo' ...more

I really liked this book. My book club was a little confused by it, but we had a good discussion about family, race, and relationships. Ward is a talented writer and her characterizations made me feel a lot of empathy for the characters, even those who repeatedly made horrible decisions that hurt the people in their lives.
