Received this book as a giveaway from Goodreads. I have not read Sattouf's first graphic novel but will be looking for it in the library after reading this, his second. This book begins when he is six years old. His family, including his French mother, Syrian father, and little brother, move from France back to his father's hometown in Syria. Riad literally finds himself in a different world. He is beaten up for being Jewish, just because he looks like he might be. Authorities in both the family

Both this volume and the first tell the tale of a childhood in the Middle East very much from the perspective of the child. So while they're sort of interesting, the author mostly misses the opportunities for more in-depth reflection or even explanation that would make them great.
