What Members Thought
The best mysteries to me are those with under layers. The Dept A books are among my favorites because they have such warmly drawn characters and the plots dovetail with social issues, especially women's and class issues. Along with Carl, the determinedly laid back boss, and Assad, the "is there more to him than meets the eye" custodian can detective, Dept Q includes Rose Knudsen, an enigmatic larger than life woman who has inhabited a few different personalities in past books.
