3.75 stars. I love Michael Connelly. This was a little too violent for me, but the writing was smooth and gripping, as always. I like Connelly's new detective and will continue with the series.
The audio was just ok. Three stars for the audio performance. I switch back and forth between book and audio nearly always. Sometimes the audio enhances the read, but the book was better for this one. ...more

The ever-reliable newspaper writer turned crime novelist introduces a new lead character in this latest page-turner. Like his most famous character, Harry Bosch, this one is a detective for the LAPD, lost a parent while young, rubs a lot of colleagues the wrong way, has a pretty unique home, and doesn't always play by the rules. I have to say it's pretty disappointing that in introducing a female protagonist to presumably kick off a new series, he hasn't put a little more effort into trying some

Time to revisit my favorite "guy" authors - Connelly, Baldacci, Coben and Silva and this was a great choice. I just flew through it. The murder was kind of gross, but loved the character of Renee Ballard. Connelly's writing is very good, the pacing is spot on, and the way the case unravels is perfect. She makes some unconventional choices but her instincts are great and she solves the case! Time to check out the prime series Ballard and pick a Baldacci for my summer reading!

Solid although the new female lead is really just a man with a woman's name.

I haven’t read Michael Connelly in a while and wasn’t sure if I really wanted to start back in with a new series. That said, this was the only unread book by him on my shelf so I went for it. Great start to a new series, having a new protagonist allows the author to write about the LAPD from a different perspective. I like Renee Ballard but hope in the future he makes her a bit less of a lone wolf. Looking forward to reading more.

Complete. Thorough.

Fast read.
