เอาจริงสไตล์มันเหมือนเล่มคำสารภาพเล่มก่อนหน้าของคนเขียนคนนี้เลย วิธีการเล่าผ่านจากแต่ละมุมมองของตัวละคร ประกอบเป็นเรื่องที่สมบูรณ์ขึ้นมา พร้อมกับเล่าเหตุการณ์ที่อัปเดตขึ้นเรื่อยๆในแต่ละมุมมอง

เอาจริงๆตอนอ่านคำสารภาพเราชอบมาก เพราะตอนนั้นไม่ค่อยได้อ่านแนวแบบเล่าจากหลายมุมมองแล้วมันส์ขนาดนี้ ประเด็นคือตัวละครทุกคนมีปมที่รุนแรง 5555 และเป็นเรื่องของการผูกใจเจ็บแก้แค้นอย่างสาสม ทำให้คนอ่านสะใจฟินตามเวลามันถึงขีดสุด

แต่พอมาเล่มนี้ โอเค เล่าหลายมุมมอง เช็ค ปมตัวละครอันรุนแรงทุกตัว เช็ค สังคมบิดเบี้ยว เช็ค แต่พอเป็นเรื่องความรู้สึกผิดบาปที่หลงไปถึงตอนโต แล้วเหมือนบางอย่างมันหายไปไม่เหมือนตอนคำสารภาพน่ะ ตอนคำสารภาพเราพอรู้คร่าวๆแล้วว่าใครเป็นฆาตกร แต่เล่มนี้เหมือนมีพล็อตการตามหาฆาตกรแทรกด้วย(ที่ก็ไม่ได้ตั้งใจให้เดายากเท่าไหร่)ซึ่งก็มาผูกปมเข้ากับเรื่องอีก มันเลยไม่ได้รู้สึกฟินแบบตอนคำสารภาพเท่าไหร่

ส่วนสิ่งที่ต้องยอมรับคือมันสนุกน่ะ พอตัวละครมันคิดมาก เสียดสีทางคำพูดอย่างรุนแรง (จนตลก) เล่มนี้เล่นประเด็นสังคมเมือง-บ้านนอกด้วย (ซึ่งก็โอเค๊ แอบเบื่อ คลิเช่หน่อย 555) แล้วปมแต่ละอย่างก็แบบว่าโอโห้ แต่ในขณะเดียวกันพอเป็นงั้นแล้วข้อเสียคือคนอ่านจะรู้สึกว่าเยอะไปหรือเปล่า อะไรจะบังเอิญ ฉับ ฉับ ฉับ ขนาดนั้น เอ๊ะ หรืออาจจะปกติในสังคมนั้น 😛

They are lucky to be alive. But are they really?
On a three-day holiday weekend in a small town, five little girls play ball at their school grounds; a man asks for help in the building and one goes with him, and only four little girls come home that day. The lasting effects of that murder have lasting, devastating effects on the five most touched by the tragedy, the four survivors and the murdered girl's mother. What happens with them is as important to this story, if not more so, than who murde They are lucky to be alive. But are they really?
On a three-day holiday weekend in a small town, five little girls play ball at their school grounds; a man asks for help in the building and one goes with him, and only four little girls come home that day. The lasting effects of that murder have lasting, devastating effects on the five most touched by the tragedy, the four survivors and the murdered girl's mother. What happens with them is as important to this story, if not more so, than who murdered Emily.
Shortly before the mother moves back to Tokyo, she asks to meet with all the girls one last time, to see if they have any further information to help identify the man. She gives them a chilling message: solve the murder or do penance, or I will get revenge.
The combined aftereffects of the murder and the threat follow the girls and we get a narrative from each of them, to the mother, as the Statute of Limitations nears. Each girl has been involved in some sort of violence resulting in a death. One remains a folk-like princess so she won't end up a target. One finds that she didn't live up to her responsible, leader reputation, and goes overboard to prove that she a superwoman. A third becomes a recluse, but protects another family member when it rises to a crisis. The fourth, a neglected younger child of a sickly sister, takes blame for everything in her life.
All wrote to the mother in their own chapter and we see, not only the lives of each girl, but also the forces of Japanese (and wider) culture in defining and limiting women to stereotypes and predetermined lives: the unchanging beauty, the caretaker, the unattractive plodder, and the unobtrusive servant.
As for the mother, when she heard from the girls, she figures out the identity of the murderer, and it is tied up with her own past. She realizes what stresses she puts on the girls and regrets her role in their tragedies.
A compassionate, well-written mystery and look at contemporary Japanese culture and the forces that shape womens' lives. ...more

The lives of four young women are inextricably linked to a childhood tragedy, the murder of a friend, that has remained unsolved for over a decade. The victim's grief-stricken mother, frustrated by a lack of closure, holds the girls responsible and curses them. Over the course of the book, each girl relates her penance - and the personal tragedies that have befallen her.
