The 13th book in this series is one of my favorites. Takes place almost entirely in Three Pines. There is an interview with Louise Penny in the last CD, and she admits that Three Pines is not a real place but rather a state of mind. As she says, "Three Pines exists when we choose tolerance over hate, kindness over cruelty, goodness over bullying, when we choose to be hopeful over being cynical, then we live in the village of Three Pines".

Completely captivated by the way this was written. I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next. Loved the story until the end. That just didn't quite work for me. This may have been a tough one to tie all together and I was not satisfied with the way it was done. I really like Gamache and will still be interested to see what happens in the next book and how he bounces back ...more

Just when I think Louise Penny's books cannot possibly get any better, they do! In this book, Inspector Gamache has to make some tough decisions that could take down his whole agency and could ruin not only his career but that of others who work with him. When there is a murder in Three Pines, Gamache instinctively knows it is bigger than just something personal, and sets his entire agency to investigating, while making it look like they are ineffecive and not doing their job.
