Shirley Hazzard’s The Transit of Venus is a novel I admired more than loved—layered, bittersweet, and beautifully written, but emotionally distant and at times almost too clever. It’s a love story with a seemingly happy ending that reveals itself as a quiet tragedy. The plot follows two Australian sisters, Caroline and Grace, as they move to England and become entangled in a web of unrequited love, betrayal, and ambition.
