This is unrelentingly grim. Grim, grim, grim. I chose it for the Popsugar challenge Dark academia (and it certainly was that) plus for the July 2020 #readtheworld21 challenge: Eastern Europe (this one's from the Ukraine). And the Ukrainian setting is a good part about this book. The beginning grabbed me with its mysterious goings-on in a seaside resort on the Black Sea (I'm thinking Crimea?) but then: it does go on rather, and there is just more grimness without any plot twists or developments

I picked this up mainly because I was curious to see what all the hype was about with this award-winning wife-husband Ukranian writing team, and this is the book that the library had available. I have no idea if it's representative of the bulk of their work, but it's one of the most boring works of fantasy fiction I've read in many many years.
