I am so glad I read Cannery Row before this, because I would not have understood the story. Cannery Row took place during the Depression in Monterey, California, and Sweet Thursday took place after WII. I liked Cannery Row, but I liked Sweet Thursday better. Mack and his band of misfits are back and so is Doc, the endearing scientist that everyone in Cannery Row treats like their local family doctor.

I can't help myself -- I really enjoyed this book. Steinbeck's Cannery Row reprise has a lot of heart and is a lot of fun. I kept waiting for tragedy and spoiler alert -- it never happened. A feel good novel replete with loads of Biblical imagery which gives the book a feeling of Bible-lite. The prophet steals candy bars. The savior is someone who can't even count their own toes and redemption is something that comes from the trinity of the individual, the other and the community. Definitely a s ...more

Steinbeck demonstrates a strong flair for the comic here - it reminds me of the bouncy, light-hearted feeling of Shakespeare's better comedies. Not his best-known work, and panned by some critics, but it's a fun and accessible entry point to his style. ...more
