I saw Beneath A Scarlet Sky one day at the bookstore last year. It reminded me of a video game I used to love, Beneath A Steel Sky. So it went on my reading list (yes, sometimes that’s all that it takes for a book to make my list).
It’s been about a year now and last night when I finished my last book, I started Beneath A Scarlet Sky.
The thought that keeps running through my head is, “Why has no one recommended this book to me before?!?” Seriously, I know I have a lot of readers on my timeline. I ...more

My grandmother always said that the true stories were the best ones, and I think that this is the kind of story she had in mind. Though this book is presented as fiction, it is based on the account of an Italian who survived WWII in Italy. At first he was helping people to escape over the mountains, and later as the driver for Hitler's henchman in Italy he secretly spied on the Germans . This one is a lot like Schindler's List in that it deals with the life of a real person who played an important role in World War II but it is presented as fiction because the author chose to include conversations between characters that probably or did take place but the exact words and events have been altered to make a good story. Knowing that the main protagonist was real and he did most of the things that are chronicled in the book makes it a more compelling read.

I have read dozens of World War II books, but I’m pretty sure this is the only one about the war in Italy. I loved that this remarkable story is based on a true story and real people. Pino Lello was only 17 at the start of the war. I don’t want to give away the story, so I won’t relate the details, but he was a hero and witness to so much tragedy. Great read, 5 stars!

Would have given it 4 stars, as it was an exceptionally good account of one young man's incredible life during WWII. However, the writing was very juvenile and made it seem as tho this was intended for grade school readers. A bit too wordy in places that made me skim over them to get to the heart of the book.
