I can see why this was voted as a Goodreads book of the year. I still found other books more compelling, but this was a good read. This is the fictionalized story of a poor river family in the 1930s and the very true and awful account of how Georgia Tan and the Tennessee Children’s Home Society rent some loving but indigent families apart, treating children as objects, abusing them and making money by offering them up for adoption to wealthy and prominent people.

interesting story based on fact. It is amazing what people can get away with if they present themselves well and are believable. Again this story is told from the past (1939) and the present. I really enjoyed the present story - the mystery of Avery's lineage and her search for the truth. But the stories of the orphanage were just sad and depressing - not the best read for this time of year.
