Of course, I'm a sucker for any book where the author begins by professing his love for Kenya, so Gettleman had me from the beginning. The narrator falls in love with Africa as a college sophomore but shortly thereafter also falls in love with a fellow student whose ambitions lie in practicing law in the US. This is the central conflict of the book. However, the best parts of the narrative detail Gettleman's experiences as a journalist, first in the rural US and then around the world. Gettleman
