Charming! I love a book or movie with a precocious child character, and Frank had so much originality. It made me want to watch Fred Astaire and William Powell and James Cagney movies and listen to Rhapsody in Blue.
This would be a fun companion to a movie marathon, featuring the many, many old timey actors that Frank was enamored of, and also:
Stranger Than Fiction (I pictured M.M. Banning exactly like Emma Thompson in this one)
Paris When it Sizzles (best Audrey Hepburn movie, for my money)

This book's a keeper. Author Johnson has said she didn't want to write a book about why the characters are the way they are, and I glad that she didn't. There is plenty of human background to these interesting characters, but that is not the same thing as trying to reach a "diagnosis." With a book as personal as this, it is not necessary. We find we are not here for that. Alice, a young woman in a modern world, gives us an identifiable adventure when she bravely tackles a job as live-in assistan
