This was a very readable locked room mystery with a great historical setting (late regency, northern England) and an interesting outcome. I really enjoyed the character of Detective Lavender and was surprised to find out he was a real historical character, even if this story isn't.

Highly Enjoyable with a Splendid Pace
Although set in Regency England (like the works of Jane Austen) this book felt earlier ... Perhaps Elizabethan. Lots of brilliant language, slang and colloquialisms made the characters real. I was rather frustrated with Lavender's obtuseness in certain matters ... But that only made me read faster! ...more
