Sally and Gillian's parents die when they are very young and they go to live with two elderly aunts. Everyone in the town thinks the aunts are witches and the girls are avoided by everyone. Gillian runs away at eighteen and Sally has a brief marriage that ends in tragedy but she does have two girls, Antonia and Kylie. It was ok. I guess I was expecting more magic on the part of the sisters. I read this for book club, though, so no harm! I'm also considering this a ghost story, for week 44 of my 2018 Reading Challenge.

One of the best books I've read about the power of close bonds between women - Hoffman nails it with great warmth and energy. Reading how she describes Sally and Gillian's relationships with their aunts and Sally's daughters really makes me hope for the same type of supportive bond with my own daughter.
