What a pile of fun. There's plenty of great things in here -- fantastic (and fantastical) world building, well-drawn and sympathetic characters, good and ingenuous villains, and a very fun plot. 100% recommend for anyone who needs a dose of energetic fantasy.

This book is a fantasy novel set in parallel layers of London. In Grey London, magic doesn't exist. In Red London, magic thrives in harmony with humans. In White London magic has become more powerful than people, and magic has destroyed Black London.
The story was well told, it has strong female characters, and kept me interested. I was happy that it didn't have a lot of deeper meaning and was a nice distraction from the more serious things I am reading. I think I will continue with the next boo ...more

Parallel Londons filled with magic? Yes, please! I enjoyed the characters and setting in A Darker Shade of Magic, though I find I've already forgotten how it all ended...This is quite possibly due to the fact I listened to the audiobook, and those tend to stick with me less. The pickpocket pirate girl (Lila?) is exceptionally likeable, and I hope we see lots more of her in future books.
