Originally written in the mid-1970s, and only recently available in English, this is the fourth or fifth of Kadare's books that I've read. Like many others, it's set deep in the past -- here in the 1820s, during the time of Ali Tepelena's rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. "Black Ali" was the elderly, unloved ruler of the Ottoman province that is modern Albania, and he made his move to write his name in history by rebelling against the sultanate.
