Discovered this book when NPR named it as one of the best books of 2017. This is the story of a woman, an undocumented immigrant from China. At 18 and unmarried, she finds herself pregnant (basically illegally for the times) and her family faces possible bankrupting fines as a result. She pays to get smuggled into the U.S. and then must work to pay off the fees to the smugglers or face dangerous consequences. Her son (Deming) is born in New York making him a U.S. citizen.
