He was a great educator who changed the world.

Booker Taliaferro Washington spent his life involved in education. During his early years he worked valiantly to pay for and receive an education despite great hardships during the aftermath of the Civil War. After graduating from college he was convinced that the best thing he could do was to educate other black youth. He eventually founded the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, now known as Tuskegee University.

Very interesting read about the life & work of Booker T. Washington, who was born on a slave plantation in the South and went on to found the famous Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Fascinating chronicle of Washington's younger life, as well as the rough/simple beginnings of the Tuskegee Institute. What an amazing accomplishment by an amazing and gracious man! Interesting from a historical and cultural perspective and it started off as easy to read. But it was hard to get through it. Washington's internalization of the systematic racism he lived in is obvious. With the constant name dropping and humble brags, as well as constant reassurance to the white ruling class that the Negro is not to be feared and will continue being a loyal and separate working class, it became tedious at the end.
