Three stars is a generous rating for this book. Rose Tremain is a wonderful author and I heard so many good reviews on YouTube about this book. My hopes were sky-high. At times, I wondered if we all read the same book.

It took me a while to finish this book. I like the premise of the book: Switzerland's involvement/response in WWII. I wished that it had been a book about that time period only, because I couldn't connect with the characters. Having said that, the book is well written and I understand the praise that it is getting.

Despite the melancholic tone that this book has it was a very enjoyable read. It moves along at a very sedate pace and is much enhanced for it.
