Absent the unique voice of the unborn narrator, Ian McEwan's Nutshell is basically a retelling of Hamlet. I'm mystified over how many GR reviewers give so little (or no) prominence to this fact, since once you look past McEwan's dazzling, often quite funny prose, you find that the arc of the original story, even with its modern setting, is fairly intact. I thought the premise of this book was interesting: the narrator is an unborn baby, narrating from the womb. The book is well written as always with McEwan, I just didn't like any of the characters

I loved the perspective of the fetus but I didn't like the voice. It came across as a cranky, jaded middle aged man...
