Every Midwesterner is familiar with the genre of “farm childhood memoir.” Usually, they consist of the “happiness and hijinks” of stable farm families and their attachment to the land and each other. Many of them are utter tripe and a few are pleasant nostalgia. This memoir, however, is not sugarcoated.
