Things got better toward the end, but I struggled with this book so 3 stars is being generous. Too much rambling, characters all over the place, back and forth in time, etc. The setting in Scotland was great, could almost feel the cold and rain and the sea. Maybe I just wasn't able to fully appreciate the writing.

My Interest
Say the words “The Somme” and you generally have my attention. World War I ends one of my favorite historical periods. That battle is one of the greatest tragedies of the 20th century. The loss of life is beyond fathoming. Add to that a Norwegian author (translated into English) and a country I haven’t yet “read” in my reading the world project and you have a book I had to read.
