Noa has been kicked out of her house after becoming pregnant by a Nazi officer and after giving birth her baby is taken away and she finds work as a cleaner at a German railway station. A train car full of babies without parents stops at the station and Noa takes one and flees. She ends up at a circuses winter quarters and is paired with Astrid to learn the trapeze. A perspective on the Holocaust that I hadn’t come across before- circuses that sheltered Jews. There are two heroines in this story, both with tragedy and secrets in their past, but who are initially thrown together as one trains the other as an aerialist. Noa has to learn the flying trapeze to stay within the shelter of the circus, with her small chosen burden. The war has changed everything and the circus is threatened, along with all of its people.
