What Members Thought

This was a fairly interesting read & setting--a novel based around an Andrew Wyeth painting that I have known about since I was a teenager, as my parents had a print of it. "Christina's World." Set on the coast of Maine in a little town overlooking Monhegan Island. Beautiful part of Maine. So interesting to have the picture "filled in" by the author. I actually gave the book 3-1/2 stars in my Reading Log. This was an audiobook from our library.

The premise of this book was interesting - to tell the story of woman in this iconic painting by Andrew Wyeth. But I just found her life and the life of her brother so depressing. For me not a pleasant reading experience, but i think it will be a good discussion. It made me spend a lot of time on the internet researching Wyeth and his paintings and I look forward to seeing the original at MOMA next time I am in NYC.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would because the first 60 pages or so were a bit boring, but maybe that was more me adjusting to the pace. The early 20th century farming life pace. The characters are complex and real. Kline's phrasing is simple and elegant. The story was slow, but it needed to be, and I loved it. It was a little like watching Wyeth paint the masterpiece himself. Very imaginative.
