The story takes place over one night in February 1862 in the graveyard where Willie Lincoln has just been placed temporarily in a crypt. The graveyard is inhabited by residents of the Bardo, spirits who don't realize they are dead. The spirits need to help Willie move on because bad things happen to children if they linger in the Bardo for too long. The book is written in a very unique style. Odd format, but after the midpoint I was more appreciative of it. It did impact my hinking about that time and our present and for those reasons I "liked it." Too much cussing in it, so it made it a challenging listen as I had to be alone so as not to offend any of my family. Can't think of who I would refer this to, as it seems to be only a very select audience that can make it through this one. The first 50 pages or so of this book felt so unusual and abstract and difficult to connect with. I kept reading because the writing was beautiful and it was Christmas so why not. About halfway through, I started to appreciate the wildly original and complex structure of the story. There isn’t an accidental word in it. Original? Yes. Amazing? No. I appreciate the research and creative thought process to write, but I cannot say I enjoyed reading it. It was just too dull.

Maybe it was just the audio version. 166 narrators?? I could not keep my attention on the book - tried 2 out of 6 CDs and gave up. TRIED AGAIN. also gave up.
