I thought I'd made a mistake after starting this, and been lured into reading a children's book. Although fairy stories play a part in this tale, it is far too dark to be a children's book. A wintry fantasy, set in Medieval Russia, it turned out to be a compelling read involving a poor but determined family, a misguided stepmother and a similarly misguided member of the Russian clergy. The Bear and the Nightingale is a captivating read. Katherine Arden is incredibly talented at setting the scene and making the reader feel as though they are right there in medieval Russia. The storyline was easy to follow and enjoyable, and I'm looking forward to finishing this series.

Arden's strengths are her settings and her characterization. The way she describes winter in Russian villages and the way she describers Vasya's ethereal beauty are just a few examples of her skill with words. Unf

Liked it a lot, not sure if I will read the sequel though. The narration was good with the accent helping create the environment and characters. Definitely has a fairy tale like feel to it.

Has a similar feel to Uprooted. Set in the land of Russian fairy tales, the plot is a bit predictable but still enjoyable. Will probably end up purchasing and reading the whole trilogy and most certainly re-read Russian Fairy Tales. ...more
